Do you want to become a firefighter in Staffordshire ?
Following the success of the last taster sessions, the service is offering another batch of on-call firefighter taster sessions for communities to find out more about what its like to be an on-call firefighter in the county.
These sessions will give people the chance to speak to crew members, have a look around the fire station and appliances, and even have a go at some potential job-related activities.
On-call firefighters are invaluable to the fire service as they provide a vital response service to their local community by attending emergency incidents.
Many on-call firefighters already have jobs, whether they’re in full-time or part-time work, or self-employed, and therefore fit in their ‘on-call’ hours around their day-to-day lives. Our on-call firefighters provide approximately 50 hours each week ‘on-call’ cover to their local fire station.
Watch Manager and On-Call Support Officer, Michelle Dudman, said: “These sessions are designed to give people an insight into what it’s like to be an on-call firefighter and help people understand the recruitment process.
“We want to recruit more on-call firefighters across the service and hope sessions like these give people a better understanding of the role and requirements as well as the benefits being ‘on-call’ can give to them as individuals as well as their community.”
Across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent, there are 30 on-call fire stations where our on-call firefighters respond from.
And on-call firefighters also receive the same standard of training as wholetime firefighters and therefore, respond to the same type of incidents and emergencies.
Michelle added: “No two days or incidents are ever the same. The role is so varied, you could be dealing with a house fire or road traffic collision, then rescuing animals or dealing with a flooding the next. On-call firefighters also get involved community initiatives in their local area – so the role itself is really varied but really rewarding.
“I would encourage anyone who’s thinking about becoming an on-call firefighter and wants to know more to come along to one of our taster sessions, even if it’s not at their local fire station, to find out what the job is all about.”
Upcoming taster sessions will be taking place at the following locations:
- Leek Community Fire Station on 17 August 2023 at 12pm
- Longton Community Fire Station on 24 August at 11am
- Rugeley Community Fire Station on 30 August at 5pm
- Newcastle Community Fire Station on 4 September at 5pm
- Burton-on-Trent Community Fire Station on 6 September at 6pm
- Wombourne Community Fire Station on 7 September at 6pm
