Over £17 million to regenerate Leek Town Centre from the Levelling Up Fund

The funding will support three projects that support the Council’s vision to revive the local economy and make it a better place for residents, communities and businesses. 

The towns Victorian market halls will be refurbished for business and community use.

The improvements include: 

  • installation of three food and beverage lock-up units into the Trestle Market Hall 
  • restoring the Victorian character of shop frontages in the Butter Market Hall 
  • installation of Wi-Fi, CCTV, insulation and heating 
  • a new separate entrance into the markets 
  • replacing 32 tables with lighter weight alternatives 

Nicholson Institute 

Levelling Up funding will also improve the public library, museum and exhibition space at the historic Nicholson Institute. This includes: 

  • refurbishing the lower ground floor into a flexible student welfare facility 
  • renovating the basement to provide operational space for the library 
  • a new venue for events and weddings 
  • increased services in the library 
  • refurbishing the museum  

Transforming Brough Park Leisure Centre 

Funding will also be used to create new swimming facilities as part of the wider leisure centre transformation.  

Improvements include: 

  • building a new 25m 6 lane swimming pool  
  • a new learner pool with moveable floor and refurbished changing rooms  
  • a new health and fitness suite 
  • additional studio space to accommodate group exercises 
  • an indoor cycling studio 
  • additional changing facilities
