SOT Council issue statement following yesterdays attack on a bin lorry and its occupants

Yesterday, Tuesday 21st March, staff from Stoke on Trent City Council’s bin crew were assaulted while doing their jobs, delivering important public services for residents of Stoke-on-Trent.

This incident occurred on Birches Head Road just before midday yesterday. Reports indicate the crew were attacked by three axe-wielding men, who are yet to be caught. One man was taken to hospital with serious injury’s and two were treated at the scene. As per the picture below the windows were smashed on the bin lorry.

The council has issued the following statement :-


It is completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

Our thoughts are with those who were injured and their loved ones, and we would like to praise and thank our crews for doing their jobs and supporting our city.

We are supporting the ongoing police investigation.

Our crews will continue to do their jobs today. Residents whose collections were impacted will have their bins collected in due course. Our teams work tirelessly to provide a public service and should not have their safety put at risk.

We thank the emergency services for their prompt response and continue to assist in the inquiry in whatever way we can.
