Coventry Named As UK City Of Culture For 2021

Coventry Will Be The UK City of Culture 2021

The winner was announced by the arts and culture minister John Glen on The One Show on BBC1.

Coventry, Paisley, Sunderland, Swansea and Stoke-on-Trent were all shortlisted to be the UK City of Culture 2021.

Hull is the current City of Culture and its programme includes 365 days of cultural events. It is estimated that City of Culture has brought a boost of £60 million to the local economy in 2017. Nine out of 10 residents have attended, or taken part in, an event as part of Hull 2017 and the city has seen over £1 billion of investment since winning the title in 2013. The winner of UK City of Culture 2021 will also have access to a £3 million Heritage Lottery Fund grant.

The shortlisted areas were invited to submit a final bid by the end of September 2017. The panel looks at the final bids from the shortlisted cities before the winner was announced.

The unsuccessful areas will each receive detailed feedback on their bids. Ministers and officials will also engage with them on how best they could realise their ambitions for widespread recognition for their cultural offer.

Fenton Residents Back The Bid For Stoke on Trent 2021 City Of Culture

Local Fenton residents had an idea to do a “Fenton Backs The Bid” event gathering in the square in Fenton on the 22nd April 2017 at 12pm, essentially bringing as many Fenton residents into the square for a photoshoot and a chance to discuss the Stoke on Trent 2021 City Of Culture Bid.

We have video interviews with one of the organizers of the event Alan Gerrard and the Lord Mayor of Stoke-on-Trent Councillor Anthony Munday.  We also have video of  a speech made by the Lord Mayor on why Fenton, and others should back the bid.
